Daggers Drawn: Demo 2010

04/10/10  ||  Lord K Philipson

I’m standing here nude, with my dagger drawn. Mrs. K is impressed. I turned 37 yesterday and received some nice gifts. I most definitely got laid too. And right off the bat we are in for a great start. I think these first few sentences will be the best thing about this whole review.

This here band, Daggers Drawn, claim this is an EP. Lemme see… They have no label but they have a MySpace. It doesn’t appear to be professionally printed, the disc. Yep, it will be filed under “demos”, naturally. EP my fucken ass. It’s a 6 track demo CD and without even hearing a tone I know this will suck so much penis the Earth will stop rotating and giant male genitalia will start raining down from the sky. And all of those raining objects will fall down right into ex-staffer/annoying little shit Smalley’s face, much to his delight.

Or so I thought. It’s fun to be wrong some times. Or at least partly wrong.

This U.K band isn’t all shit actually, but I am sure they have incredibly bad teeth. Man, that joke never gets old. Or maybe it does. Either way, this is some kind of metal that comes across as a hella lot heavier than one would think judging from their origin and the moniker. Ok, Bolt Thrower is from the UK as well and they are heavy as shit, but that’s another story. Guess you could say they are the exception to the rule.

Either way, Daggers Drawn might not be the tightest musicians in the world but they manage to churn out their shit in a decent manner. They do have a huge problem though; they, for some fucken idiotic reason, choose to throw in misplaced clean vocals in the mix. Not a smart move. The growls are fine (well, decent anyways) as they are and works with the half melodic/somewhat heavy mumbo jumbo these guys play – why spoil the overall impression by having clean vocals that adds nothing but irritation and confusion? Ditch them. Yesterday. Kudos for having the bass so up-front though, that’s a definite plus in my book. Now if the actual bass sound was any good it’d been perfect. But you can’t have it all, can ya?

What style is it really? It’s a mixture of a bunch of genres actually, so take a listen to it and decide for yourself. It’s too early in the morning to be talking about genres.

It’s not like we’ll see these guys being the next big thing or something along those lines, but it’s an ok demo. For being from the UK.
